Rainbow flag design

A moment of inspiration, a lifetime of work

It happened on a dance floor in a swirl of colored lights. Struck by the diversity of people moving to the music, artist and activist Gilbert Baker had a vision: the now ubiquitous rainbow flag.

While the idea may have come in a moment of inspiration, Baker devoted most of his life to ensuring it would endure as a powerful symbol for his community, which is now celebrating Pride Month.

For fans of design, as well as equality, activism and hard work, the story of the flag and its creator continues to be an inspiration.
