User experience: designing dialogue boxes.

One of most important things to keep in mind when designing the user experience is saving them time. For example, how often do you read an entire pop-up dialogue box?  You’re not alone; very few do. Then when you are presented with the options Yes or No, you are forced to choose.

When designing dialogue boxes, avoid confronting the user with Yes and No whenever possible. Instead, use words that directly relate to the action that you’re looking for.

In this example, Yes and No should be replaced with Replace and Stop respectively, as illustrated below. If the user has seen the dialogue box before, they will recognize the commands and choose correctly.
